Dr. A.J. Racy is a performer, composer and Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of California at Los Angeles. Racy is internationally recognized for his extraordinary musicianship and his numerous publications, including his award-winning book, Making Music in the Arab World: The Culture and Artistry of Tarab (Cambridge University Press, 2003). He is a master of many traditional instruments, particularly the nay, a reed-flute, and the buzuq, a long-necked fretted lute. He has composed and performed for the Kronos Quartet and the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, as well as for feature and documentary films. Dr. Racy is the recipient of numerous honors and tributes from a variety of cultural institutions for his outstanding artistry and his continuous work toward greater intercultural understanding and cooperation. He will be joined by special guest artists Souhail Kaspar (darabouka/hand drum), Naser Musa ('ud/lute), and Petro Ammar (riqq/tambourine).
Samba Societyis a collective of musicians from the Brazilian community of Southern California. Under the artistic direction of UCLA Ph.D. candidate
Beto Gonzalez, Samba Society is primarily dedicated to the partido alto and samba de terreiro popularized by Rio’s “Old Guard” of urban samba. The group’s repertoire features renditions of vintage sambas reminiscent of classic recordings from the 1970s. Samba Society features Colin Walker (7-string guitar), Mestre Amen Santo (percussion), Simon Carroll (percussion), Bobby Easton (percussion), Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro (pandeiro / percussion), Louise McCarthy (vocals), Mauro Monteiro (vocals), and Emina Shimanuki (vocals), and will spotlight very special guests Mitchell Long (cavaco) and Katia Moraes (vocals).
